Rhetoric!

Every single day, I am impacted by countless things that I am often unaware of. I wake up and step into the hallway of my dorm to see at least a few flyers on the walls. I walk toward the stairs and am hit by even more flyers and ads promoting events and groups on campus. Sometimes I check my twitter while walking down the stairs-which usually ends badly- and am bombarded by all kinds of ideas and thoughts my friends have posted about that morning. I proceed to the dining hall where CNN and Sportscenter are playing on the televisions. Commercials and advertisements fill the screens every few minutes. When I leave the dining hall for class, thousands of my classmates are putting forth ideas based solely on their clothing. All of this takes place within only an hour of waking up! All throughout my day, other ideas are thrown into my brain without me even realizing.
Everything I encounter on a normal day has some kind of rhetorical impact on me. Even if I'm not consciously processing it, advertisements get me thinking about products, flyers cause me to consider going to events, tweets put new ideas in my mind, and some commercials even persuade me to reexamine my values. All of this comes about with just a simple, nonchalant glance at a flyer, commercial, t shirt, or tweet. My mind captures a mental picture and unconsciously takes away an idea from the artifact. Rhetoric plays a very key role in almost all of our lives. It's very easy to go about a day without realizing even for a moment that you have been attacked by hundreds of various new ideas, thoughts, and values. Rhetoric has a huge effect on everyone's lives, whether we realize it or not!
